Paco Rabanne Invictus (EDT) Review

How we're funded

Paco Rabanne Invictus is the 2013 grapefruit and marine aquatic that a decade of imitators was built on, and our score is 7.0, the lowest of the 37 fragrances we track. It smells good. It loses on longevity, sillage, projection and value to a budget bottle in the same lane, and eight later flankers now share the name on the shelf.

Invictus scores lower than anything else in our catalog, and the reason has nothing to do with how it smells.

Our mark is 7.0 across 37 records, and the stance is try it on skin before you commit. The case against it is not that it performs badly. Acqua di Gio performs worse and scores 7.8. The case is that a budget aquatic in the same lane takes 4 for longevity, sillage and projection where this one takes 3, and beats it on value too. Two things complicate that. Of 94 Spanish-language reviews on its Fragrantica listing, 45 complain that it is everywhere and 21 of those still tell you to buy it. And nine bottles now carry this name.

A budget bottle takes every performance mark off it

Rasasi Hawas for Him scores 7.9 to the 7.0 of Paco Rabanne Invictus, and it takes the three performance marks outright: 4 for longevity, sillage, which is the trail you leave behind you in a room, and projection, against 3, 3 and 3. Value says the rest. Hawas holds a 5 there, Invictus a 3, and both records are built on an aquatic accord weighted 60. The catalog note we keep on Hawas for Him has said the same thing for a while: same territory, less wear time, more money.

What that gap buys you is a working day. A projection mark of 4 means someone sitting across a table notices without leaning in; a 3 means they find it when they are already close to your collar. Repeat that across a summer and the difference stops being a spec sheet and starts being whether anyone knows you put anything on.

The English-speaking forums arrived at the same conclusion without our numbers. In a March 2026 thread on r/ScentHeads asking whether the EDT is still worth buying, which drew 45 comments, three separate people answered with Hawas before anyone answered with a flanker, meaning one of the later bottles in the same line. One called it the new Invictus outright and put it at about half the money. Another pointed at Armaf Odyssey as a second budget route into the same smell.

Armani Acqua di Giò is the third seat at that table and the quiet one: 7.8, with sillage and projection down at 2, which is why nobody accuses it of being everywhere even though it has been everywhere since 1996. It takes the full 5 for versatility. Invictus takes 4. If you want the whole argument laid out with measurements instead of opinions, when the cheaper bottle wins on numbers is the piece to read before you spend.

That value mark keeps strange company. Look up the twelve records we score at 3 or worse for value and nine are niche, which is the honest kind of expensive: rare materials, small production, a name on the box. The other three are designers off a department-store shelf, and Paco Rabanne owns two of them.

Grapefruit, pool water and a sweet floor

Grapefruit, sea spray and warm skin, in that order. The opening is grapefruit peel: bitter, oily, the spray you get bending the rind near a candle, with none of the juice. Under it sits the marine note, which is a lab material, not anything scooped out of the ocean, and it reads as chlorine and cut melon at once. Anyone who has walked into a changing room with a pool behind the door knows the smell.

The middle is bay leaf and jasmine, and neither behaves the way the ingredient list suggests. Bay leaf here is the dry, slightly medicinal leaf you drop into a stew, and it stops the top from turning into lemonade. The jasmine is there for texture more than character; you would not name it blind.

The base is where the sweetness people argue about lives. Ambergris in a 2013 designer means a synthetic amber material, salty and warm, close to the smell of skin after a day in the sun. Oakmoss and patchouli sit under it and give the drydown, the last hours once the top notes have burned off, a faint damp-forest edge that most wearers never consciously register.

Aquatic leads at 60, citrus follows at 50, aromatic at 40, musky at 35, woody at 30. That is a fresh structure with a sweet floor, and it explains the one complaint that turns up in every language: on paper it is a clean summer scent, on skin the sweetness arrives faster than the freshness leaves.

Four perfumers signed it, which is unusual for a designer launch: Véronique Nyberg, Anne Flipo, Olivier Polge and Dominique Ropion. That committee is audible in the result. Nothing sticks out, nothing offends, and the composition is engineered for the widest possible room.

Everyone owns it, and that is the real decision

Forty-five reviewers out of the 94 we counted on the Fragrantica listing for Invictus raise the same objection: it smells generic, everyone wears it, you will meet yourself on the bus. What makes that number interesting is how it splits. Twenty-one of those 45 say it and recommend the bottle anyway. Sixteen use it as the reason to walk. Eight raise it without taking a side.

The counter-argument came from the same Reddit thread, and it is the strongest defense of this bottle anybody has written: Invictus is copied so widely that it now sounds like its own imitators. One commenter called it lost in a sea of redundancy while pointing out that in 2013 there was nothing else like it, and that several of the fresh sweet bottles people currently rate exist because this one worked.

Both positions are correct, which is why our score sits where it does. A 7.0 is not a bad fragrance. It is a fragrance whose reason to exist has been taken over by cheaper bottles doing the same trick louder. Twenty-four of them mention clones or copies unprompted, and 8 name Hawas specifically.

How long does Invictus last on skin?

Four to six hours on skin is what a longevity mark of 3 means on our scale, and the wearers who time it report longer than that. Of the reviews we counted, 21 give a concrete figure: 12 land between 5 and 8 hours, 7 claim more than 8, and only 2 report 4 hours or less. Clothing is doing most of the work at the top of that range.

The arc goes like this. The first fifteen minutes are grapefruit and marine at full volume, the part everyone recognizes from a shop floor. By hour two the citrus is gone and the sweet amber base has taken over, sitting close to the body. From hour four you have a soft, salty skin scent that you will find by lifting your own shirt and other people will not find at all.

Fabric is why the long reports exist. Eighteen reviewers mention clothing, several describing the smell still on a jacket the following day, and that matches the base: amber and patchouli grip cotton and wool far better than skin. One spray on a collar outlasts two on the neck.

A hand bringing the sprayer of the blue and silver bottle towards the chest of a grey cotton t shirt, bathroom shelf behind
Shirt, not neck. Eighteen reviewers in our count reported finding the fragrance on a garment a day after they sprayed it.

Dose is the part to get right, because this is where Invictus makes enemies. Nineteen of those reviews report headache, dizziness or a cloying effect, and almost every one of them describes over-spraying in a closed room. With projection at 3 the temptation is to compensate with volume, and the sweet base does not scale gracefully. Two sprays indoors. Three outdoors, with one of them landing on a shirt instead of your neck if the evening has to be covered.

Nine bottles called Invictus: which one this review scores

This review scores the original eau de toilette from 2013, the one with the trophy-shaped bottle and the silver top. Eight more products have carried the name since, some of them nothing like an aquatic, and Fragrantica's product pages for the line date every launch. Nobody discounts a flanker for being the flanker you did not want, which is what makes this the priciest error on the page.

Nine dated names in twelve years, plus a newer Invictus Elixir now circulating whose launch year we could not confirm, which is why it has no row above. We hold no scoring record for any of the eight flankers, which means the last column is what the house published about each one, never a judgment of ours.

The sorting is straightforward. Victory and Victory Elixir are winter bottles that borrowed a summer name, so the sea-spray opening you came for is missing from both. Parfum is the stronger version of what you already like, and it is the one flanker a commenter in that thread told the original poster to buy instead. Aqua is the lighter branch. The 2013 eau de toilette stays the reference, which is why every copy aims at it.

Who this bottle is actually for

Spring and summer, day or night, on someone who wants to be liked rather than remembered. Versatility reaches 4 while the compliment score stalls at 7, the floor of our catalog, shared with eight other records including Dior Sauvage EDT. That combination describes a fragrance people enjoy and rarely comment on. If your goal is being asked what you are wearing, the records that actually get remarked on are ranked elsewhere and Invictus is missing from that list.

It earns its keep in heat. The grapefruit and marine top is built for temperatures that would flatten a woody amber, and a 30C afternoon pushes the sweet base forward faster than it does the citrus, which is the honest reason so many wearers describe it as sweeter than they expected. For the season it belongs to, which summer bottles outscore it is a short and slightly unkind list.

The age reading is worth knowing before you spend. Thirty-three reviewers frame this fragrance around being young, and that is a statement about who has been wearing it since 2013 rather than about the composition. Nobody will guess your age from grapefruit and salt. They may recognize the bottle from a nineteen-year-old they know.

The three ways this purchase goes wrong

Almost nothing goes wrong at the till here. It goes wrong when the box on your desk turns out to hold a different Invictus, or a bottle that has been sitting in a warehouse since 2019, or 100 ml of something you wanted to own 10 ml of. In the order of what each mistake costs you:

  • The name. Nine products share it and the boxes are cousins, so the small line under Invictus on a listing decides whether you get the 2013 eau de toilette or a vanilla night scent from 2021.
  • The seller. Counter, department store or discounter changes the price, the stock age and your recourse.
  • The size. The cheapest of the three mistakes, and the easiest to avoid.

On channel, the split between counters and screens is real. Boots and the department store beauty halls price this within sight of each other, and a counter still offers the one thing a screen cannot: your own skin, a blotter, this afternoon. That matters when the whole decision rests on whether a projection mark of 3 is enough for you.

American shoppers also meet the gray-market discounters, and one reply in that Reddit thread answered the where-to-buy question with a discounter name and nothing else. Those sellers are legitimate and cheaper, and they are also where aging stock and gray boxes circulate, so make sure the stamped code on the outer box and the code on the glass are the same string. Our guide to the tells a counterfeit leaves walks through the rest of that check.

Size follows versatility. A mark of 4 says this bottle gets used up instead of shelved, so the biggest format is the sane buy once you know you like it. Undecided? A decant or the smallest bottle settles the only question that counts here: whether anything is left on your skin at six in the evening. On the ten-sprays-per-milliliter math the spray count calculator uses, a 100 ml bottle at three sprays a day runs to somewhere near a year of daily wear, which is a long commitment to a smell you are unsure about.

Is the recent juice really purple?

The tint question comes up constantly in English threads. Two wearers in that Reddit thread compared an old bottle against a recent one and described the newer juice as carrying a slight purple cast, weaker in person than in the photos going around, with a matching opening and a drydown a shade less musky. Rabanne has announced no reformulation of this bottle, so that stays a community observation rather than a fact about the formula. Read color as a batch marker, never as evidence of a fake, and do not pay a premium hunting old stock on the strength of it.

Common questions about Invictus

Is Paco Rabanne Invictus still worth buying?

It is worth smelling before buying, which is why our stance is try it first. The composition holds up and nothing about it has aged badly, but at 7.0 it is the lowest score in our catalog and a budget bottle in the same lane beats it on longevity, sillage, projection and value. If you already know you love the smell, the answer is yes. If you are shopping the category from scratch, smell Hawas for Him on the same arm before you decide.

What does Paco Rabanne Invictus smell like?

Bitter grapefruit peel over a chlorine-and-melon marine note, landing on a warm, salty amber base that most people read as sweet. Bay leaf keeps the opening from turning into lemonade. After two hours the citrus has gone and what is left is that sweet skin smell, which is the part people either love or call generic.

How long does Invictus last?

Four to six on skin, which is what our longevity mark of 3 stands for, and five to eight in the reports that carry a stopwatch. Of the 21 Spanish reviewers who gave a figure, 12 landed in that longer band, 7 claimed more than 8 hours and 2 reported 4 or less. Clothing skews the long reports upward: the amber base holds on cotton overnight, so a spray on a collar outlasts anything you put on your neck.

What is the best Paco Rabanne Invictus dupe?

Rasasi Hawas for Him, and it is not a close contest. It is built on the same aquatic accord weighted 60, scores 7.9 against 7.0, and outperforms the original on all three wear marks while sitting in the budget tier. The differences are real: Hawas leads with apple and cinnamon where Invictus leads with grapefruit, so it reads fruitier and slightly spiced. Armaf Odyssey is the other name that comes up in English threads for the same job.

Which Invictus should you buy?

The 2013 eau de toilette if you want what this review scores. Invictus Parfum from 2024 is the sensible upgrade for anyone who likes the smell and wants more of it, and it was the flanker recommended most often in the thread we read. Aqua is the lighter, fresher branch, sold under three different formulas dated 2018, 2024 and 2025. Avoid Victory and Victory Elixir unless you actually want an amber and vanilla night scent, because they share the name and almost nothing else.

Is the new batch of Invictus purple?

Some of them, by the account of wearers who have held an old bottle and a new one at the same time. The house has announced nothing, and a tint tells you which batch you have rather than whether it is genuine.

Is Invictus a good summer fragrance?

Yes, and summer is the season it was engineered for. Our record lists spring and summer, and the grapefruit and marine opening is designed for temperatures that would smother something heavier. The trade is that heat also pulls the sweet amber base forward faster, so the fresh phase you bought it for is shorter in August than in May.

Does Invictus smell cheap?

Not at three sprays. It smells synthetic in the way every modern marine fragrance smells synthetic, since the note does not exist as a natural extract, and the amber base is a lab material too. What makes it read cheap is dose. Nineteen of the 94 reviews we counted describe a cloying, headache-inducing effect, and those reports come almost entirely from heavy application in closed rooms.

What does the name Invictus mean?

Unconquered, in Latin. Rabanne built the whole campaign on it, which explains the trophy-shaped bottle. The word is better known from a Victorian poem and a 2009 film, and that is why searching the name in English returns a lot of results that have nothing to do with fragrance.
